R. Murchison, picturesque police captain of Dougina, A rir.Jl the town on the edge of the Mexican desert where the police . of two entions searched for the “kidnapers” shack which was never found, made the declaration in answer to a long hypothetical queselon. Tke substance of the question which covered the entire alleged kidnaping episode from the time Mrs. McPherson disappeared from the Venice beach until she walked Into the Mexican village of A gni Prtetn five weeks later, was as follows: “Coaid a woman. SI years old. mother of two children, Undergo the trials claimed by this defend ant sad thee walk 29 ssUo®, -as half hours without water and wttheat shewing afterward even the slightest signs of exhaus tion?” “I don’t know of any one who could do it.” was the former cowboy’s answer aa defease at torney Gilbert attempted to dis qualify Murchison as a desert ex port. No Evidence Been Murchison admitted that a woman could have made such a trip as Mrs. McPherson claims to have made, but he qualified this by declaring that her physical condition would have been touch worse and her clothing would have shown the effects of the trip In marks of perspiration, rips or tears and signs of wear on the shoes. The clothing * Mrs. McPherson wore had been exhibited sad a bitter encounter between Gilbert and District Attorney Asa Keyes occurred when the defense at torney overturned a tumbler and spilled water on the dress. Keyes jumped to hla feet sad accused the evangelist’s lawyer of deliberately soiling the evi dence to aide the défense ease. “We have kept this dress In the exact condition in ‘ which it was removed from Mir». So far as I am concerned, I, personally, am not interested in where dams or reservoirs are built or what other steps are taken to procure this needed water supply. • , ‘BUT WHAT I AM INTERESTED IN, AND THERE ARE MANY WHO AGREE WITH MB, ABB THE QUALIFICATIONS 0 7 THE MAE OR MEN WHO ABB DECIDING WHAT SHOULD EE INO THEBE VARIOUS FBOFOSALST « H A T ABE HIS QUALIFICATION? Mr. Dillard is the engineer who had complete charge of the construction of the Talent Irrigation District. y At the present time he is in complete charge of Medford's big municipal water project, one of the most ambitions municipal water projects ever at tempted in Oregon outside of Portland. He has done considerable general engineering and Hydraulic engineering work for the federal gov ernment, and is known among the engineering pro fession of the Pacific coast as being both competent and conscientious to a high degree. Mr. Dillard is being employed by the eity of Ashland in a consulting capacity alone. Bnt he consented to make this water investiga tion for the people of Ashland. He has and now is investigating every possible source <rfa water supply for Ashland and will recommend only thore' psojoete which he considers entirely feasible. His report, a cottlpteto written compilation, will be in readiness within a week, according to mem bers of the council, and the city officials have enough confidence in him to ask the voters to approve what ever recommendations he may see fit to make. The report of Mr. Dillard will apply only* to the procuring o f additional water ,to enlarge the muni cipal system. Other proposals, such as huHding the Crowson Hill reservoir, the improvement of the oity distribution system and similar projects are those which present city officials believe are needed, and which they are recommending to the /voters. , It is the theory of business, both private and public, that the best men obtainable 'should be pro cured. The mayor and members of the council be lieve that in the retention of Mr. Dillard they were able to procure the best available engineer to carry on their investigative’ work. They invite a complete inquiry into his qualifications and standing as a water engipeer, and will endeavor to supply any further information concerning him which may prop erly be sought ' . * Agrees Letter Writer« Urged to Get Per- Busy and Compete for r Ouh Prizes MEDFORD, Ore., Oct.
